New initiative aims to unite the Danish space sector and put Denmark on the global space map
2 December 2024
Space Denmark has been officially launched today as Denmark’s unifying platform for the space sector. With the ambition of becoming the central platform connecting all space activities across the country, Space Denmark aims to create a stronger ecosystem that will position Denmark as a key player in the global space economy. The launch comes at an exciting time, with Denmark’s new national space strategy and increased investment in ESA marking a significant step forward for Danish space infrastructure and innovation.

Last week, the National Space Conference was held at Aarhus University in Denmark. The conference is hosted each year by one of Denmark’s universities, and the focus of this year’s Aarhus event was on the government’s recently unveiled space strategy. This strategy doubles Denmark’s contribution to ESA and supports a 10-year growth plan for research, innovation, and commercialisation within the space sector. As a grassroots initiative, Space Denmark will build on the space strategy by uniting stakeholders under a single umbrella with a shared narrative that will strengthen Denmark’s position in the global space economy.
Space Denmark’s founder, Søren Gram Riisgaard, believes that the key to growth in Denmark’s space sector lies in coordinated collaboration and an international outlook: “There are many exciting things happening in Denmark in the space field, but neither the general public, the wider industry, nor the outside world are fully aware of how space can benefit them. Despite being a small country, Denmark has enormous capacity in space – from world-leading research to talented companies, start-ups, and students. Now it’s about connecting the dots and raising awareness of what we can do.”
Already on its opening day, the organisation has gained a number of members, both large and small, who believe in Space Denmark’s mission. One of them is DI Danish Defence and Security Industries, the trade association for the defence, space, and security industries. “DI Danish Defence and Security Industries looks forward to collaborating with, among others, Space Denmark, where we can explore and strengthen Denmark’s position within space technology and security together. Through joint efforts, we can ensure that Denmark remains an innovative and reliable partner in the international space community,” says Jeppe Nørregaard Krusager, Chief Consultant at DI Danish Defence and Security Industries.
The organisation will promote collaboration and knowledge sharing between the country’s space stakeholders. Through initiatives such as matchmaking events, workshops, joint projects, and representation in international forums, Space Denmark will ensure that Denmark receives the visibility and access needed to play a larger role in the global space race. Becoming part of the mission is free, and members will gain access to networks, knowledge, and delegation trips to international space events. “It is important for us that as many participants as possible from Denmark’s space ecosystem can help shape the future of the space sector, which is why we are not charging for membership,” says Søren Gram Riisgaard.
With the launch of Space Denmark, the first step has been taken to unite and strengthen Denmark’s space sector. It is now time to build on the momentum created by the new national space strategy and put Denmark on the world map as a driving force in space research, innovation, and commercial development. Space Denmark invites all those interested in space – from companies and research institutions to students and enthusiasts – to join the community.
