Gatehouse Satcom Formalizes Collaboration with Rohde & Schwarz to Strengthen 5G NTN Testing

Gatehouse Satcom, a Danish satellite communications software company specializing in 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), has formalized collaboration with Rohde & Schwarz to strengthen validation and testing of 5G IoT-NTN and NR-NTN technologies as the market moves from specification work toward real-world implementation.

What are 5G IoT-NTN and NR-NTN technologies?

5G IoT-NTN (Internet of Things, Non-Terrestrial Network) enables low-power, global connectivity for massive numbers of IoT sensors and devices via satellites, while 5G NR-NTN (New Radio) extends full 5G New Radio capabilities—supporting higher data rates, voice, and broadband services—to non-terrestrial platforms, bridging coverage gaps in remote and underserved areas. According to Gatehouse Satcom, the industry is currently moving from specification work toward real-world implementation of the technologies, where stronger and more repeatable validation will be needed across GEO, MEO, and LEO satellite services.

By bringing together Gatehouse Satcom’s 5G NTN software expertise and Rohde & Schwarz’s test and measurement capabilities, the two companies aim to improve how 5G IoT-NTN and NR-NTN technologies are validated under realistic and controlled laboratory conditions.

Through the collaboration, Gatehouse Satcom gains access to the Rohde & Schwarz CMX500 platform as part of a joint effort to further develop advanced orbit and channel emulation capabilities for NTN use cases. This supports more accurate satellite radio channel modelling and more realistic testing of 5G NTN behavior across different scenarios.

At the same time, Gatehouse Satcom contributes end-to-end NTN test results, technical insight, and engineering feedback that can help Rohde & Schwarz continue strengthening its NTN-focused test capabilities for the wider market.

The collaboration is expected to support faster validation cycles, earlier identification of system-level issues, and stronger test conditions for technologies that are set to play an important role in the future of standardized satellite connectivity.

Ultimately, the ambition is to support the broader NTN ecosystem by improving test realism, reducing technical uncertainty, and accelerating time to market for the ecosystem.

“Our collaboration with Rohde & Schwarz marks an important step toward more standardized and repeatable 5G NTN validation. As one of the early companies working hands-on with NTN software, we see a clear need for more realistic and reliable testing environments as the industry moves closer to deployment. This collaboration helps strengthen exactly that foundation – not only for us, but for the broader NTN ecosystem,” Peter Mariager, VP of 5G Technology at Gatehouse Satcom said.

“We are delighted to partner with Gatehouse Satcom to accelerate validation methodologies for 5G NTN technologies – including GEO, MEO, and LEO satellite services. As the satellite sector converges on standardized, 3GPP‑based solutions, close collaboration between software innovators and test‑equipment specialists is essential. This partnership not only strengthens the tools and insights needed for today’s 5G NTN rollout but also lays a solid foundation for future 6G NTN testing and validation,” Christian Dobmeier, Director of Product Group CMX500 at Rohde & Schwarz said.
